State of the strip and other stuff…

by Chris Flick on March 15, 2016 at 01:38
Posted In: Blog, News

I have a tendency to sometimes run a joke into the ground… not just through the ground but all the way to the other side of China, in fact. And sometimes, when I run this joke into the ground on one of my Facebook friend’s wall, I get the typical reaction of “shouldn’t you be drawing a strip?”.  To be honest, I have gone to Beat Up Joke Anonymous meetings and have tried my best from falling off the dead joke wagon.

But lately, I’ve been getting a similar type of reply by another Facebook friend who’s closer to me than some of my relatives. Those replies don’t have anything to do with a mutilated and beat up joke. It, instead, has to do with getting sucked into the current political climate. The funny thing is both these guys are absolutely great to be around. We just can’t always talk online because we tend to have wildly different view points on a lot of different things. What’s even funnier is we can have the same discussions in person and everything is fine. But have them online and it usually never turns out good – no matter what any of our intentions are.

So lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about a wide assortment of things… whether it’s the current state of the strip, what’s currently going on in the US, how social media and Facebook is playing a role in it and how I can take up the advice of my two Facebook friends and be more productive with my time.

It’s a simple thing to just say “draw more strips” but there’s more complication than just sitting down and drawing. And thus, The State of The Strip…

When I hit my 1,000th strip and decided to take a break, it was both the best thing and the worst thing I could do. After seven years of nearly always posting something every Monday, Wednesday and Friday 95% of the time, even though I couldn’t admit it, I was burnt out. It was getting harder to come up with new ideas, it was getting harder to be consistently funny (okay, TRYING to be consistently funny) plus it was getting a lot harder to DRAW. That had to do with the cyst that I detailed in a previous post and how it was making my hand numb after only a few minutes of drawing. Used to be I could draw for hours and then suddenly I could only draw for short burst at a time.

All of that lead to a much longer break than I intended and then I got a new job working at the US State Department helping to redesign all the US Embassy websites around the world. Fantastic job but it was time consuming – especially the commute. In the evenings, I would come home and the last thing I wanted to do was to draw and so I didn’t. Except when I had commissions here or there. Or I had to prepare for various conventions – which I still attend. But the daily three strip a week grind? Nope, didn’t want anything to do with it. Still loved all the characters. Roy was with me every convention I went to but going through the process of writing, drawing, inking, scanning, coloring, posting writing a blog, promoting it on social media and buying ads to do the same… the spark just wasn’t there. The hand and wrist were feeling great but idea-wise, I had… nothing… and the guilt kept growing. Especially when I would talk about it on the Webcomic Alliance podcast.

I had no intention of ending the strip. I just couldn’t get it started again.

A large part of that was because, soon after starting the State Department job, I tried to force myself into a pretty ambitious story arch that just petered out and I had no idea how to get the strip back on track. I literally created myself into a corner and had no way out. It was only recently that it suddenly occurred to me that there are no “rules”. I make the rules up in Capes & Babes so I could, literally, do anything I wanted and could figure out an explanation for it later.

And I have figured a way out of my little problem. Some of that has been hinted at at the first new strips I have done in ages concerning Roy. That will be revealed in due time. No lie. The strips are already fully, 100% completed. I just haven’t posted them yet.

But getting back to where we are today… taking my Facebook friends advice… I decided to heed their advice – but maybe not in the way they expected or possibly wanted. Instead of wasting endless and needless time discussing (and arguing) on Facebook about certain political things I couldn’t control even if I wanted to, I’m going to try and use some of that frustrated energy (and viewpoints) and put them in the strip. I have done this in the past here and there so it shouldn’t be anything new to long time readers. But for anyone who has discovered me in the last year or so – either through Facebook, a convention or somewhere else, you should be aware of the following:

Although Capes & Babes started out as a humorous strip (or tried to be, anyway), I never intended it to always be just a humor strip. There was a very subconscious and specific reason why I put a werewolf in the strip. Once I realized why I had a werewolf in the strip, there was also a very calculated move to soon add a female vampire to the strip and to form a relationship between Roni and Roy. For all intents and purposes, they are in a mixed relationship. There is prejudice from Roni’s brother that Roy constantly has to deal with. Likewise, even though I haven’t really done a blatant job at coming right out and saying this, but Al and I.R. Hungre have become way more than just an Alien and an Zombie. It’s been extremely subtle but if you go through the archives with strips featuring I.R. Hungre  and Al, maybe you’ll see it.

Likewise, all the werewolves in Capes & Babes deal with society looking at them suspiciously and Marc has had to inadvertently deal with saying the wrong thing to a werewolf… sometimes with comedic results and sometimes with serious ramifications. In the past, I always tried to walk a VERY tight tightrope when dealing with things of this nature. I was trying to build a following and was always afraid of pissing people off. You never know what kind of reaction you’re going to get when you decide to do things that touch on politics, race, religion or anything else going on in society. I still don’t like to piss people off. Even on Facebook, I try my best to listen to the “other side” even though I am not always successful.

For me though, there is currently a lot of hatred out there. Everyone also seems to feels absolutely justified for all the hate they are showing. And we can argue all day and all night about who is right, who is wrong, who’s rights are being violated, who’s aren’t, who’s instigating, who’s not… I don’t pretend to have any answers here. I know how I wish things could be and tried to reflect that on Facebook and other places only to be hit with more frustration. And then it FINALLY hit me… why be frustrated with a world I can’t fix when I am already in control of a world I can fix? At least for a little while.

I can’t promise many of you are going to enjoy the next few brand new Capes & Babes strips… but ALL of you will be more than welcomed and free to share your comments, complaints, thoughts or anything else in the comments section. If you want.

New Release Wednesday

Hey folks… last week, I was asked by my super great friend, Patrick Michael Strange to be on his YouTube show NEW RELEASE WEDNESDAY.
The video was shot inside a comic book store across the street from George Mason University here in Northern Virginia with me and my other great cosplaying friend, Harry Crossland. The store is called The Amazing Comic Shop and  if you’re in the area, it is in the University Mall.

Here is my episode (and I STILL hate how I sound on video):

So where are the dang cartoons already???

Alright… so this blog post has been a long time coming. I’ve been reluctant to write this blog post simply because there are some future unknowns coming my way and I really didn’t want to say or mention anything until I got more information. Now, all of that sounds way more cryptic than it actually is so I really need to start from the beginning but before that, I want to assure everyone the strip IS NOT NOT NOT NOT ENDING.

Did I mention that the strip is NOT ending? I did? Good.

Okay, so here’s the deal… back in the winter of last year – specifically November and December – I did a LOT of shows closely grouped together. As many of you who have seen me at various shows know, I tend to do a LOT of drawing at shows – either caricature cards, commissions, signing and drawing in every book that is bought or simply drawing cartoon werewolves for people. Well, somewhere around that same time, I developed a cyst on my right wrist but didn’t realize it as I thought it was simply some minor carpal tunnel or over exertion of my wrist (yeah, you can insert your own jokes here if you want). But January and February came and I started finding it harder and harder to draw without feeling tingling sensations in various fingers.

To combat it, I tried a serious of different things… magnetic gloves, ice, Advil, wrist braces… I even bought a new drafting table hoping that drawing on an angle would relieve the sensations I now experienced whenever I either drew or tried to write for extended periods of time. All of these things helped – to an extent – but for only short periods of time. The only thing the TRULY helped was not drawing at all. So I decided to get this feeling checked out and to finally see what was going on.

I went to my family doctor who suggested I make an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon. The orthopedic surgeon diagnosed the cyst but suggested I make an appointment with a hand specialist. The hand specialist looked over everything and decided I needed to get an MRI and a nerve damage test done before a proper diagnoses was complete.

Well, today (July 22, 2015) I had the MRI done. I had a previous MRI done when I had a baseball knee injury years ago. Back then, I only had to go into the MRI tube up to my waist – which was easy and really relaxing. Today, I had to be immersed much deeper into the tube. And it seemed much, much tighter than I remembered. At first, a tad bit of claustrophobia began to set in as I was immersed all the up to the bridge of my nose. But I got through it since it had to be done.

Now, the next step is going back to the hand doctor and getting the nerve damage test done, go over the MRI results and figure out what the next step is.

The good news is that I can still draw. There’s no real pain until I try to draw for long periods of time. It sucks that my drawing production has dropped off the face of a very long cliff but I wanted to let you all know that I am doing everything I can to climb back up that cliff so I can once again be as productive as I was when I was working my way through 1,000 Capes & babes strips.

As soon as I know more about my diagnoses, so will you all as well.

Thanks for understanding and I hope you all will see Roy back in cyber pixels very, very soon.

Hey everybody, everything is okay…

by Chris Flick on May 4, 2015 at 23:58
Posted In: Blog, News

Hello everybody…

Since the start of the year, a few people have e-mailed or posted comments on this site asking if everything is okay. I  have been meaning to write a post letting everyone know what’s been going on but due to a variety of reasons, I just keep forgetting. Well, tonight I thought it would be a great time to let you all know what’s been going on.

First, everything is okay.

Many of you might recall that I initially went on hiatus back in September due to the fact that I was in limbo about my full time job. It was going to go away in December but then it didn’t. But there were still rumors after the new year that many at my former company (including yours truly) were going to lose their jobs anyway. It’s hard enough to do a strip three times a week without the threat of unemployment hanging over one’s head so even though I did return from hiatus at the start of the new year, I was still on shaky grounds in terms of a full time job.

But then something great happened…

In early February and March, I started getting some really serious interest in my resume and had quite a few interviews. I eventually was hired by a new company and I now work in Washington DC three times a week. That’s the really great news. I’m doing a LOT of design work – which is great, but the hours (and the commute) are completely different than what I had been used to and it’s been difficult to try and find extra energy to devote to the strip during the week.

But what about the weekends?

Well, that WAS the plan I had when I accepted this job. The plan was to work on the strip Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays but thus far, I haven’t been able to do that because…

My weekends have been jammed pack…

At the start of this year, I said I didn’t want to do as many shows as I did last year. In 2014, I did close to 25 shows or appearances of one form or another. Between November and December alone, I did four weekend shows in five weeks so there was definitely a little bit of burn out going on. So this year was SUPPOSED to be different…

But then another crazy thing started to happen…

I started getting quite a few invites to be a special guest or have guest status bestowed on me this year. I have already done a half dozen shows already and it’s not even summer yet! Plus, at the end of every show, I had some kind of commission work to complete – either caricature sketch cards, sketch covers or flat our commissions. In fact, I still have to finish one more commission (I haven’t forgotten, Dave!). So yeah, even though you haven’t seen new Capes & Babes strips popping up on this web site, that doesn’t mean I haven’t been drawing. In fact, I have been drawing quite a bit – I just haven’t been doing it in comic strip form.

So, what’s going on with the strip right now?

If you’re wondering if I am ending it, the answer is absolutely NOT. In fact, I have the entire current story arc storyboarded and scripted. I simply have not found the time it takes to draw all these strips out. Yet.

There is sunshine up ahead, however…

The good news is that I have to go away this weekend for my son’s Little League Challenger’s Jamboree in Virginia Beach and at the end of this month, I will be in Washington DC attending Awesome Con DC. Once Awesome Con DC is over, I don’t have any more conventions scheduled into the very end of summer. So, unless something unexpectedly comes up, after Awesome Con, I SHOULD start to have much more time to get back to finishing up this story arc as well as a bunch of other story ideas I have been collecting since the new year. The ideas are there. The time is not.

Still, with the good there’s the bad…

Because I just started my new job so recently, I don’t have enough time earned yet to take the necessary days off for conventions I have gone to in the past. The previous ones I mentioned have been in travel distance (with the exception of the East Coast Comic Con – I did have enough time off to attend that show since I had made a commitment to attend months ago). Heroes Con was a show I was hoping to get back to this year but that is going to have to wait until next year, possibly. I will, however, be at Intervention Con as well as Baltimore Comic Con and would like to attend the new three day NC Comic Con show in the fall and possibly get back to Steel City Show in December. Those shows are quite a few months away. As the saying goes, we shall see.

In any case…

I AM planning on cranking out new Capes & Babes strips soon. I wish I could tell you the guilt I am sometimes feeling in the morning when I wake up and realize I didn’t create a strip the night before. The good news is that those guilt feelings are beginning to get stronger and stronger so usually that means something inside of me is kicking my proverbial butt and demanding I start producing the strip again. So, stay tuned…

My Convention Bio

by Chris Flick on March 25, 2015 at 21:41
Posted In: Conventions, Odds & Ends, Promotion

This is the bio I usually send to conventions to post on their web sites:

Chris Flick

Chris graduated from Radford University in 1991 with a graphic design and commercial illustration degree, did a bunch of graphic related odd jobs and eventually wound up in an advertising agency where he taught himself html.

Since then, he got married, had two kids, rescued a couple of stray cats and created a comic strip for www.communitymx.com called “CMX Suite” that ran for five years. Somewhere in all of this, his unpublished college graphic novel stayed in his brain and eventually he warped that idea into a humor strip, added a crazy werewolf and before he knew it, in 2007, Capes & Babes was officially born.

The stray cats have all since passed away and Chris’ house is now overrun with two dogs (but used to be three). Chris continues to write and illustrate Capes and Babes three times a week, attends numerous conventions along the east coast and is a member of the Webcomic Comic Alliance – a site devoted tohelping other creators dive into the wonderful world of webcomics!

Chris wants everyone to know he desperately tried to keep this bio down to two short paragraphs. Chris also wants everyone to know he hates everyone who refers to themselves in third person with a heated passion. Chris also wants you to know his fourth collection of Capes & Babes strips is now available and titled “This fFur Don’t Burn!”.

You can read Capes & Babes three times a week at www.capesnbabes.com
