Hey look, folks… A NEW STRIP!
I should also mention… this strip also marks the very first time I have ever put myself IN the strip itself.
All those names mentioned in the first panel are REAL people that gave me many of the ideas I used for different ways Roy got silver poisoning. I didn’t feel comfortable using their last names without their permission so only their first names were used. They were all people who contributed to a Facebook post I made earlier in the year where I asked for suggestions with “silver” in it. Now, I didn’t reveal the reason WHY I was looking for suggestions with “silver” in it but now you all obviously know.
I tried to use as many suggestions as I possibly could but some I just couldn’t make a joke out of. – at least not in three to four panels, anyway.
Here were some of the suggestions I thought were great but couldn’t figure out how to use:
- Kevin Bacon movie, Quicksilver
- The song “silver and gold” – never heard of it
- The song “silver dollar” by Bobby Darin – another one I hadn’t heard
- Silver Bullet, the movie
- Silver Lady by David Soul
- Silver Streak, the movie
- Silverchair, the band
- Alicia Silverstone
- Silver, by The Pixies
- Silver, by The Smashing Pumpkins
- Comic book characters: Silver St. Cloud, The Silver Samurai, Silver Sable, Silverclaw
- Phil and Cathy Silvers
- Jay Silverheels
- Man on the Silver Mountain, a song by Ronnie James Dio
- A song “Silver Thread and Golden Needles”
- Sliver and Gold song
- Brandon, MO theme park, Silver Dollar City
- Silver-haired fox/vixen
- Silver Ranger (Power Rangers)
- Silver rings
- Silver Streak
For everyone who contributed their ideas, I thank you for your suggestions. I hoped it was fun seeing some of your suggestions pop up in the strip. As you can see, I probably COULD have continued this strip idea but at some point, I figured it was time to go to something new as I have quite a few other strip ideas I haven’t even started yet.
I think “Silver and Gold” was a song from one of those Christmas specials from when we were kids. I’m thinking “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, the stop-motion animation one.
Never seen “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”? Silver and Gold was one of the songs the snowman, played by Burl Ives, sang… It’s probably the lesser of the major songs, but still pretty famous.
Ahhhhhh…. you know, now that you both have mentioned the Burl Ives song, it DOES ring a familiar now. It didn’t when I first saw the suggestions – as a couple of people suggested it. And it had been a while since I have seen the stop motion animation… 🙂
Thanks.
Wait- what happened to Dewey? Was he not evil enough for Cheatum and Howe? Did they decide to go in another direction and add muscle over subtle extortion?
That’s the second time in a month I have seen that reference so I’m extremely pleased that the joke lives on!
I might need to add that I apparently typo’d the city of Branson, instead putting Brandon, MO, in the Silver Dollar City suggestion…
