619 – Sucker Punch…
Joey has one hell of a right LEFT upper cut, doesn’t she?
For those of you that may not understand the last panel, “the 4th wall” refers to the invisible plane in which the audience is allowed to view a theater stage, a movie screen, a television show or, in this particular case, a comic strip. In dramatic pieces, the first rule of theater is to “never break the fourth wall”… that means for the participants in the drama, the audience doesn’t exist.
However, in comedy, this “rule” is broken quite often – most often in movies. The ones that come to mind right away are “The Last Action Hero”, “Purple Rose of Cairo”, “Top Secret” or “16 Candles” – the last two of which were done very subtly.
What are some movies or TV shows that you recall characters breaking the fourth wall?
And while you’re thinking about that, I also want to mention Intervention Con… this is a second year con that I will be attending in early September. I plan on writing some more about the convention quite a bit in the following weeks but for now, I leave you with their header banner (modified to fit this blog):
Go to www.interventioncon.com to learn more about this fantastic event TODAY! And better yet, when you go there, sign up to attend. This year is going to be a blast and, if you attend, you will have the chance to meet a large line-up of some really great web cartoonists – and you’ll get to meet me and my five foot stand-up of Roy as well!!!
Hope to see you there next month!
